Julia Välimäki | Samuli Karala | REVS Magazine #1 | 'Freedom'
/
Note | Nudity Julia Välimäki is lensed by Samuli Karala in ‘Freedom’ for the first issue of Finnish REVS Magazine. Appearing to me as an inspired dancer in a Martha Graham production of ‘Lamentation’, Julia may be projecting not grief but possibly the struggle of female identity and self expression.
Historically being female was the business of the church and family and, to a less extent, politics. Today being female is the focus of the church, family, politics and big business.
Developing a distinct sense of self-identity is almost impossible in our image-saturated, instruction-rich culture that monitors and struggles for possession and control of female identity, physicality and actions. I will be taking up this fight for ‘self’ in my next 2Ps in a Pod blog post with Bro. Dennis.
Returning to REVS Magazine and ‘Freedom’, Julia is styled by Teri Niitti in a simple construct of lyrca-rich fabric that expresses her confinement while revealing the movements and clawing-out direction of her possible liberation. Anne
