America's Founders Worried About The Appeal of Trump Style Thug Leadership

Facebook co-founder donates $20 million to defeat Trump Politico

Dustin Moskovitz, who joined Mark Zuckerberg in co-founding Facebook before going on to found Asana has committed $20 million -- with his wife Cari Tuna -- to elect Democrats this fall. "The polarization in America today has yielded a race that is about much more than policies and ideas," Moskovitz wrote in his essay titled "Compelled to Act.", published on Medium. "It has become a referendum on who we want to be -- as individuals, as a nation and as a society."

The $20 million will be divided among the Hillary Victory Fund, the DSCC, and the DCCC, the League of Conservation Voters Victory Fund and For Our Future PAC.

Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin and the Thug Theory of Leadership The Daily Beast

The Founding Fathers warned about the danger of this “strongman” school of leadership since the earliest days of our democracy. Alexander Hamilton cautioned “There are seasons in every country when noise and impudence pass current for worth; and in popular commotions especially, the clamors of interested and factious men are often mistaken for patriotism.”
“Noise and impudence” is certainly one way to describe The Donald’s campaign style. Its nationalist, know-nothing appeal is emotional. Especially in times when people feel out of control—for example, when the forces of globalization are shaking every old tribal certainty—some folks gravitate to the guy who is strong and wrong. They are soothed by tough-guy theatrics that divide the world into us against them. They take comfort in the bully because they believe he’s got their back. Of course, bullies are scared and self-interested creatures themselves and they have no friendships, only interests.
John Adams argued, “without the great political virtues of humility, patience, and moderation… every man in power becomes a ravenous beast of prey.” But humility, patience, and moderation are emotionally unsatisfying for people who need to feel the overwhelming force of power to believe its real.

Donald Trump has successfully exhausted our ability to be shocked VOX

Indeed, what Donald Trump said at Wednesday night's poorly-moderated by Matt Lauer Commander-in-Chief Forum was shocking. But as Matthew Yglesias makes clear, we are not shocked. If President Obama had said one-third of the statements made by the Republican candidate, Washington would be in the throws of impeachment proceedings.

Yet, Trump rolls along down the campaign trail, with his vice presidential running mate Mike pence also praising the leadership skills of Russia's Vladimir Putin. Simply stated, the fast-moving Trump train should be running off the rails, but it defies the laws of physics on every turn.

Hillary's Major Union Endorsement

The United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipefitting Industry (“UA”) announced today it is endorsing former Secretary of State, U.S. Senator and First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton for President of the United States. 340,000 members live in the US and Canada.

“Hillary Clinton brings a unique blend of experience to the office of President of the United States,” said Plumbers and Pipefitters Union General President William P. Hite in announcing the endorsement. “She is a skilled diplomat and a tough negotiator, yet she also has great compassion for working families. She is committed to rebuilding our country’s aging infrastructure, especially our water and waste water systems, and all facets of the energy sector, including pipelines, nuclear and natural gas. These are top priorities for the United Association of Plumbers and Pipefitters and for the whole country. I’m confident Secretary Clinton will provide the leadership to get the job done. She will help America become stronger, more competitive and create quality jobs in the process.”

Clinton Wins Key NH Union Endorsements The Hill

The New Hampshire chapter of the National Education Association, which has 16,000 members, said Monday it will also support Clinton for president. The endorsement gives Clinton the backing of the biggest public employee union in a critical early-voting state.

Hillary, DNC Face Pressure to Add Debates

Only a call from President Obama or Hillary Clinton herself could change Debbie Wasserman Schultz’s position that six presidential primary debates is enough. The Clinton Campaign has repeatedly stated that they welcome more debates, but Wasserman is standing firm, writes Politico.

“There has been discussion between the officers of the DNC and the chairwoman, [but] she’s made her decision and her position clear,” said DNC vice chair Tulsi Gabbard, a Hawaii congresswoman who — along with former Minneapolis Mayor RT Rybak, another vice chair — is calling for more debates.

Why I’m Sticking With Hillary Clinton  Huff Po

LGBT rights activist and gay veteran of the US Army Wayne Anderson explains his commitment to Hillary.

Unlike so many people, Anderson does not demand perfection of his political candidates. If a politico can’t admit to making a past mistake, how then does s(he) learn from them?

Honestly, with the amount of time Hillary Clinton has been active in politics and public life, I’m sure it is far from the only mistake she has made. So why do I remain loyal to Hillary Clinton and support her run for the presidency? Mainly it is due to two simple reasons. Her record on the issues I care about is the first, and the slightly more distant second is that the other options besides Hillary are not only disappointing but sometimes downright scary.
So if I am to cast aside my history with Clinton what are my other options? I actually admire some of Bernie Sanders’ positions on the issues, but I cannot support a socialist for president. I love America. I gave up several years of my young life volunteering to serve and defend this country in the U.S. Army. America is one of the few countries where you can be born poor yet rise to the highest of heights in our society. And that is because we are a Capitalist country, and though not a perfect system, without it there would be no American Dream. America is one of the one of the very few places where rags to riches dreams still come true. They happen every day. The economic socialism that Sanders supports would kill the American Dream in my opinion. So no, I cannot support Saunders. Former Governor Martin O’Malley seems like a good guy but just doesn’t have the gravitas or grasp of international politics that Clinton commands with ease. And though I like Vice President Joe Biden, he has a long history of questionable verbal statements and gaffes, and the fact that he did not support the raid that killed bin Laden has always made me question his nerve.
