US Job Growth 1964 and 2011 and By Political Party
/HopeTracker| New York Magazine takes a look at America’s 10 most valuable corporations, comparing their number of employees in 1964 and in 2011.Note that a major shift has occurred in terms of companies on the list.
Total employees in 1964 are 1,766,000 vs 3,572.900 in 2011. Not so bad you say? Wrong.
In 2011 one-third of the jobs are overseas; in 1964 the number was a small fraction of the total.
In the 2011 total, Walmart owns 2,100,000 jobs or 59% of the total at an average hourly pay of $11.75 and annual incomes of about $24,000. Without Walmart, the 2011 job total for the remaining nine companies is 1, 472,900.
If we peel off the top employer in 1964, we take 758,000 AT&T higher-paying than Walmart jobs off the table, leaving 1,766,000 remaining. Not only is that total 300,000 more jobs in the top 2-9 in 1964 but the vast majority of those jobs were in America.
