On Friday, the World Food Program said “The food supply line to Somalia is effectively broken.”

America has delivered food to the region — 40 million pounds — but it’s being held up in warehouses in Mombasa, Kenya, according to the NYTimes.  Somalia is in a state of total breakdown and lawlessness. UN officials say the country hasn’t been in such dire shape since the central government collapsed in 1991.

The US has played a crucial role in Somalia, supplying 40% of total food aid into the country.

With pirates boarding food ships with increasing frequency, there’s growing concern that America is indirectly funding Shabab, the Somali terrorist group with growing ties to Al Qaeda.

Americans are also focused on the ground, over concerns that UN contractors also may be funneling aid shipments to Shabab. They probably are.

With another pending starvation disaster on the world’s hands, the US really is in a catch-22 situation. If people start dying in massive numbers in Somalia, which AID officials insist is about to happen, America is again the global bad guy.
