Pearls for Girls

It’s said that diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but a set of pearls stole the show last night at Christie’s New York auction of the Collection of Elizabeth Taylor. All 80 lots of Taylor’s jewels were sold for $116 million, with only two items selling within auction estimates reports Forbes.

The big winner of the night was the “La Peregrina,” the 16th Century pearl on a necklace designed by Cartier for Taylor, sold for $11.8 million, setting the world record for a pearl jewel. The pre-auction estimate was $2 million to $3 million. Applause and nervous laughter came from the bidders as the price of the diamond hit the $10 million mark.

“La Peregrina”  — the 16th century pearl — has been depicted in art works for centuries, including the 17th century Spanish artist Velazquez . Coveted by crowned heads of European dynasties, the pearl became part of a diamond and ruby necklace created for Taylor by her husband Richard Burton in 1969, working with Cartier.

For glitter-loving girls, The Elizabeth Taylor Diamond, a 33.19-carat Asscher-cut D color potentially flawless diamond that Taylor wore nearly everyday, sold for $8.8 million, well above the $2.5 to $3.5 million estimate. Read on at Forbes

Gun Love

AOC adores Lovecat #3 sexy new editorial ‘Body Double’, but we don’t love guns. Following up on our widely-read Gun Love | Sobering Statistics | America Is An Armed Fortress, we note that according to NICS background checks for people purchasing one or more firearms, Americans legally purchased a minimum of 14.4 million guns in 2010, compared to 12.7 million in 2008. In fact, gun sales were decreasing from 1999 to 2004. Individuals registering for gun permits has risen from 9.0 million in 2005, when the tide turned to rise to 14.4 in 2010. via FBI Gun Checks/NICS
