Donna Karan and AOC friendEllen Gayda share a respect for Eastern practices of medicine. When Anne saw Ellen for her treatment on Friday, her dear friend and body psychotherapist was leaving to visit an extended family member dying of very advanced cancer. The grieving family knew that Ellen’s hands and words would help all hearts and spirits in this person’s final days of this life on earth.
WSJ shares news that Donna Karan’s Urban Zen Foundation is moving into direct therapy at the Ronald Regan UCLA Medical Center with an Eastern healing program designed by Karan, whose husband Stephen Weiss died of lung cancer in 2001.
UCLA is already busy training the first 30 staff members in yoga therapy, Reiki, essential oil therapy, nutrition and contemplative care to help patients with pain, anxiety, nausea, insomnia, constipation, and exhaustion. The services will begin to be offered beginning in December, the hospital says. Thereafter, UCLA will train new teams of 50 employees at a time, ultimately training as many as 300 personnel for inpatient and outpatient services.

Sex Talk for Teens
The big weekend read from NYT Magazine is the cover story ‘Teaching Good Sex’ by Laurie Abraham. One of the final points in the excellent and informative read is that parents who embrace the positive value of sex ed aren’t nearly as vocal in communicating their views as social conservatives who want an end to sex ed in the schools.
Abraham profiles Al Vernacchio, who teaches Sexuality and Society at Philadelphia’s Friends’ Central, an affluent Main Line school and has never had a complaint from a parent since he arrived in 1998.
Sex & Culture Factoid
In Sweden, where children begin sex ed at age six, the percentage of girls having sex before age 15 is lower than in the US.The rate of teen pregnancy was 7 per 1,000 birth in 2007, compared to 49 in the US.
Sweden’s school officials reject the social conservatives argument that sex ed encourages promiscuity.
