Akin vs Koresh

Kellyanne Conway, a consultant for the embattled Senate candidate Todd Akin told the Family Research Council that the Republican pressure on him to resign compared to the 1993 federal siege of religious cult leader David Koresh. St. Louis Today writes:

“I’ve expressed this to Todd as my client for a while now, I’ve expressed it to him directly,” Akin consultant Kellyanne Conway said in interview released today by the conservative Family Research Council. “The first day or two where it was like the Waco with the David Koresh situation where they’re trying to smoke him out with the SWAT teams and the helicopters and the bad Nancy Sinatra records. Then here comes day two and you realize the guy’s not coming out of the bunker. Listen, Todd has shown his principle to the voters.”

Koresh was the leader of the Branch Davidians religious sect, whose standoff with federal agents in Waco, Texas, in 1993 resulted in a fire that killed Koresh and 81 others, including 28 children.

Akin didn’t outright call McCaskill unladylike; he simply said she had been more ladylike in the past.

To Hell With Obama Voters

Bishop Thomas John Paprocki says a vote for Obama puts your soul in grave trouble. Bishop Thomas John Paprocki has advised his flock in a written message and video that a vote for Obama could put their soul in “serious jeopardy” because of “intrinsically evil and gravely sinful” Democratic policies.

This latest volley from a Catholic bishop comes as a new Pew Research poll found that Catholics are now heavily behind the president, with Romney losing 54 to 39 percentage points. Any bounce with Catholics Romney expected by choosing devout Catholic Paul Ryan as his vice-presidential running mate is headed not in the direction of heaven.

On June 17, Pew showed President Obama with only a slight lead over Romney (49-47). Jon O’Brien, of Catholics for Choice, argues that the new poll results confirms that the Catholic Bishops’ Fortnight for Freedom has backfired.

Among Catholics who know about the bishops’ protest and legal crusade against the Obama administration over the contraception mandate compromise, 78 percent support President Obama.

Witchita’s George Tiller Clinic to Reopen

The Wichita-based non-profit group Trust Women Foundation Inc., founded by a former employee of the murdered abortion doctor George Tiller, has purchased the clinic and intends to reopen it. Julie Burkhart says the new clinic won’t perform later-term abortions which are now illegal in Kansas and will offer a wide range of obstetrical and family care.

Burkhart acknowledged the building’s past was an issue in the search for a new clinic site but said the good that can come from reopening it as a medical center “outweighs any stigma that people might see.”

“We want to work to take the abortion piece of health care out of the corner and normalize it,” Burkhart said. “Women should not be ashamed. Women should not be intimidated.” via U.S News

Planned Parenthood Colorado

The Planned Parenthood Action Fund announced on Friday that it will launch a multimedia campaign in Colorado leading up to the first presidential debate in Denver next Wednesday, Oct. 3. Huff Po writes:

PPAF has scheduled a rally in Denver for Tuesday, as well as airing a 30-second ad on local Colorado television stations and launching two 15-second mobile/tablet ads. The Colorado campaign, part of PPAF’s national voter engagement effort called “Ask Mitt,” has also bought ads in the politics section of the Denver Post online all day Tuesday and Wednesday.

In an innovative move, the campaign will place an “Ask Mitt mobile chalkboard” aorund Denver, on which pedestrians can post direct questions for Mitt Romney about his positions on birth control access, family planning and women’s health care.

OpenSecrets.org reports that WomenVote!, the super PAC of Emily’s List took in $1.9 million in the month of August, topping it’s cumulative fund raising for the entire year. Emily’s List is focused on opposing Republican candidates like former Gov. Tommy Thompson and supporting progressive women candidates, typically Democrats.
