Vanity Fair 100th Anniversary Cover Girl Kate Upton Named Model of the Year

Kate Upton Channels Marilyn Monroe For Vanity Fair’s First Century Celebration

Model of the moment Kate Upton blows out the candle on Vanity Fair magazine’s first century  as a publication, lensed in an ode to Marilyn Monroe by Annie Leibovitz..

WritesVanity Fair:

Inside the issue, Leibovitz photographs Upton lounging on the moon, mimicking the illustration on the original cover of Dress & Vanity Fair from October 1, 1913. Upton tells contributing editor Jim Windolf that her road to success wasn’t always easy: “I’m not going to name names, but one agency told me, ‘You’re too American, and everybody knows American women are lazy.’ I was so offended! I’ve never been so offended! I was like, ‘You know that you’re in America, right?’ And it wasn’t ‘American models’—it was ‘American women are lazy,’ period! I feel like a lot of women would disagree with that. A lot!”

Vanity Fair 100 Years: From the Jazz Age to Our Age by Graydon Carter

Vanity Fair 100 Years showcases a century of personality and power, art and commerce, crisis and culture—both highbrow and low. From its inception in 1913, through the Jazz Age and the Depression, to its reincarnation in the boom-boom Reagan years, to the image-saturated Information Age, Vanity Fair has presented the modern era as it has unfolded, using wit, imagination, peerless literary narrative, and bold, groundbreaking imagery from the greatest photographers, artists, and illustrators of the day. This sumptuous book takes a decade-by-decade look at the world as seen by the magazine.

Kate Upton 2013 Model of the Year

The spirited, talented young woman in charge of her career Kate Upton has been named ‘model of the year’ and will be honored at the 10th Annual Style Awards in New York’s Lincoln Center on Wednesday. Nicole Richie will host the event, which will kick off Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York.

CNN will air the event on September 14.

After covering the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue two years running, Kate is the new face of David Yurman and ‘The Other Woman’ in a new Cameron Diaz film. At David Yurman, Kate joins that other Kate — Moss — and Gisele, also a ‘footballer’s wife’.

By now it’s safe to say that Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show stylist Sophia Neophitou was dead wrong when she said that Kate was “too obvious” and “has the kind of face that anyone with enough money can go out and buy.” Of course, we’ve bet on Kate Upton since Day 1 of her personally-managed, self-directed career.
