So close was the sleuth to Monroe that he was tuning into his wiretaps on the day Monroe died.

“Yes, I did hear a tape of Jack Kennedy f-ing Monroe,” he told Vanity Fair in 1992. “But I didn’t want to get into the moans and groans of their relationship.”
