Five months before Election Day, voter engagement generally equals or surpasses levels from the four presidential campaigns prior to 2008 — a watershed year, reports Pew Research. Much is made of the fact that voter interest has declined since the Obama-McCain race four years ago. The fact that with the exception of 2008, voter interest surpasses all campaign since 1992 promises a significant turnout.

Personhood Attempt Fails in Ohio

ABC News reports that the attempt to put a perhood amendment on the ballot in Ohio this November has failed. The supporters of personhood collected only about 30,000 of the roughly 385,000 required to put personhood on the ballot.

Supporters fell short of the required number of signatures to qualify for the November ballots in Nevada and California. And in Oklahoma, the state’s highest court halted an amendment effort there to grant personhood rights to human embryos, saying the measure was unconstitutional.

Voters rejected personhood in Mississipi last November, although Republican lawmakers tried to introduce it again as a state law in 2012. Note that a federal judged moved yesterday to block Mississippi’s sole abortion clinic.
