LundgrenAmerica’s 42nd president and founder of the William J Clinton Foundation was cautiously hopeful, speaking before a crowd of 5,000 at the National Retail Federation’s annual convention Monday in New York. Citing a 5 percent growth rate in retail last year, Clinton said retail ourperformed the total economy at 2 percent. WWD reports:
However, the 42nd president of the U.S. and founder of the William J. Clinton Foundation, cited the deep financial and psychological impact of the current economic crisis including how people feel about themselves and their prospects which are changing, noting that many men are taking retail jobs that traditionally went to women. “All during my childhood and young adulthood, I never doubted not for one minute I could make a living.” But the recent economic crisis has “shattered” that line of thought for people. “This is more than just an economic crisis. It’s gone to the core of people’s sense of who they are and what they are worth.”
Clinton’s speech was themed ‘Embracing Our Common Humanity’ and it covered the world’s unsustainable way of life; his humanitarian efforts in Haiti; and fighting childhood obesity in the US. Speaking of childhood obesity, Clinton said it could “bankrupt the health care system if we don’t do something about it.”
On the subject of solutions, Clinton cited the development of high-end manufacturing jobs and patronizing the small independent shopkeeper. High-end manufacturing jobs support American research labs, and America must not lose those, said Clinton.
Citing Corning Glass, based in upstate New York, Clinton said:
“Corning manufactures all over the world but they also manufacture here because their labs are here,” Clinton said. “They want manufacturing and research together so they can check [new products] right away.…The manufacturing structure ought to give people incentives to do this.”
