Biking and the Environment
Not only is bike riding good for your health, but it can be great for the environment.
Our international readers know that concern for the environment is under massive attack in the US with many Republicans rejecting climate change and concerns about carbon emissions as a hoax and more moderate Republicans afraid to open their mouths in support of their previously-declared concern for the environment.
Christie Pulls NJ From Greenhouse Gas Coalition NYTimes
Just today the NYTimes reports the New Jersey governor Chris Christie has announced that his state will be the first state to withdraw from a 10-state trading system, the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, declaring it an ineffective way to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
Critics of cap-and-trade programs say they constitute a new form of taxation because they impose additional costs on electric utilities that are then passed on to customers.
The remaining nine states say they are holding firm, Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont issued a statement on their website saying:
The Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI), a collaborative effort of ten states, is delivering more than 700 million dollars in investments in the clean energy economy that are saving energy consumers money, making businesses more competitive and creating jobs throughout the region. With each state exercising its independent authority to achieve low-cost greenhouse gas emissions reductions, the RGGI market-based program has widespread support across the region and will continue.
Three of the five Republicans — Lisa Murkowski, Scott Brown, Susan Collins, Olympia Snowe, and Rand Paul — who voted against the Paul Ryan health care bill are from this region, which is almost the only place moderate Republicans are still willing to embrace a party platform that ruled during the Reagan years.
It’s hoped that the more moderate Mid Atlantic and New England states will hold the line on commitment to the environment.

Azzarello, who has been with Recycle-A-Bicycle since 2001, says entrepreneurs need three basic things to start a bike program: a space, a budget, and most importantly, a partner. Alliances with government entities like the Parks Department and the NYPD have been instrumental in Recycle-A-Bicycle’s success.
