Brazil's Dilma Rousseff An Expert on Pork Roast | Ending AIDS In 3 Steps @ Hillary Clinton | Republicans & Slippery Zips

Anne is reading …Pork Roast in Brazil
The Economist checks in with Brazil’s president since June 2011, Dilma Rousseff, saying that “In a never-ending telenovela of sleaze, Dilma Rousseff is tackling the excesses of patronage politics but not yet the underlying system.”
As a reminder that patronage always plays on both sides of the aisle in Brazil as well as the US, Dilma Rousseff needs hip boots for Cleaning the Brasília pork factory.
First come the corruption allegations, then the indignant denials, more evidence, equivocation and retractions—and finally another of her ministers has to walk. Since June Ms Rousseff has lost her chief of staff and the ministers of transport, agriculture, tourism and sport, variously accused of influence-peddling, bribe-taking, signing fraudulent deals with shell companies and diverting public funds into party coffers or their own pockets. Now Carlos Lupi, the labour minister, has become the latest to look as if he is heading for the exit.
Pakistani Perspective on Nato Strike

Herman Cain “reassessing” candidacy
Speaking of yet another “just say no” Bible-toting guy who may have a serious problem keeping his pants on, the Herman Cain presidential campaign is considering its options after FOX News Atlanta — not the Rachel Maddow Show or any other liberal-bias media outlet— broke the news of the pizza man’s alleged 13-year extramarital relationship with Ginger White. Yesterday Cain’s lawyer basically told the nation that the social conservative candidate can f*** whoever he pleases; it’s none of America’s business.
It’s clear that social conservatives are forgiving Newt Gingrich for ditching two wives — delivering divorce papers to wife #2 in bed, in her hospital room after breast surgery. Newt has found God and the Catholic Church and that’s all that matters. As for forgiving Herman Cain, who has countless calls to Ginger White all over his private cell phone bill according to FOX — and Cain even responded to the inquiry on said phone number, the social conservative response is to be determined.
In all honesty, forgiveness for mortal sins runs deep among social conservatives, so don’t count out the pizza man. Actions to not speak louder than words, except when commandering the bodies of American women.

Imagining the AIDS Impossible
Earlier this month, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton spoke at a gathering of scientists, where she stated emphatically that an AIDS-free generation of children is possible around the world, writes Voice of America.
We can do this in three steps: using medication to stop mother-to-child transmission during pregnancy and at birth; expanding voluntary male circumcision, which is an effective means of lowering HIV transmission rates; and intensifying drug treatment for HIV-positive persons, proven to reduce the virus in the bloodstream and to lower the risk of transmission. When used in combination with condoms and other prevention tools, these three interventions offer an historic opportunity to diminish the worldwide rate of new infection.
The always-savvy Clinton knows that not only is the Vatican against her, when the topic is condoms for AIDS-infected men to use, but so are social conservatives — primarily Republicans — itching to cut off every dollar of American foreign aid that allows condoms for women as a reality check protection or health insurance policy (if they can get their husbands to use them.) Just say no to HIV-infected husbands say the Republican conservatives. Better to die of AIDS than use a condom if your husband can’t keep his pants on.
Traveling in Africa last week, where about 22.5 million people live with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa, Pope Benedict decided to sidestep the issue of condoms and AIDS entirely.
ANTI-HIV Gel Trial Halted
Last year we were thrilled over early reports of a study of 889 women in South Africa using an anti-AIDS gel called Voice. It appeared that the gel was enormously effective at killing HIV in a woman’s vagina after intercourse. Over about 30 months, the gel supposedly cut infection rates among the most faithful users by 54% with an overall reduced rate of 39%.
The study was rapidly expanded with hopes high that a magic bullet was at hand to help protect the women of Africa from contracting AIDS. On Friday hopes were dashed as scientists suspended the research trial. TIME reports:
“We don’t know precisely why it didn’t work,” says Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, which funded the current trial study. “But my strong suspicion is that women who had to put the gel in every day probably got tired of it.”
