2012=1968? is the question asked by this week’s New York Magazine cover story Will Occupy Wall Street Upend Obama’s Presidential Election? Will November 17 be the last gasp of the OWS rebellion or the start of something really big by 2012. Where does President Obama really stand with OWS and how do they feel about him?

One of AOC’s big issues with OWS is the visible absence of women in the leaderless group that still manages to cough up talking heads for TV. The left totally sold out women and women’s issues in the 60s (they, too, wanted women to serve the coffee). One woman emerges in the NYM article: Sandy Nurse:

Nurse is a striking half-Panamian, half-Irish-American who grew up as a military brat, worked on activist causes such as human trafficking, and now is a self-described “ballbuster” logistician for OWS.

Girls Club Scorecard

NYTimes Boys Club

You can follow the NYTimes Sunday Magazine on Twitter with this lineup of writers:  15 men, 3 women. Interesting that 40 years after the second wave of feminism, only three women Susan Dominus, Ariel Kaminer and Rosie Schaap measure up. Breaking down just how many women there are in major media will be a major focus on AOC in 2012.

Update 12/6/11: writers have increased to 21. Hilary Greenbaum and Sara Cwynar added. So now the score (which we will be tracking throughout the NYT and other key publications in 2012) is 21 writers listed: 16 men, 5 women for NYTimes Sunday Magazine.

Daphne Guinness is lensed by Steven Klein and interviewed by Peter Brandt II in his first chat for Interview Magazine’s November 2011 issue. We say ‘chat’ because there’s a lot of Brandt the son in a strong give-and-take between the two.

Yes, Daphne Guinness talks about her current projects including a 100-piece exhibition of her personal style at The Museum at FIT (on view through January 7, 2012) and the founding of her own film production company Mnemosyne.

Most interesting are strong discussions about the power of reading and books, the philosophy of fashion and critical thinking. Read on at Interview Magazine.

Mnemosyne & Her Nine Muses

The Greek goddess Mnemosyne  was the daughter of Gaia and Uranus  and the mother of the nine Muses by Zeus.   In Theogony ‘the birth of the gods’, a poem written by Hesiod (circa 700 BC), Mnemosyne is the source of the power of authoritative speech. Kings and poets received their powers of authoritative speech from her and also the nine Muses.

Painting left Mnemosyne (1881) by Dante Gabriel Rossetti and vase right Mnemosyne and a Muse, Lekythos, Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Siracusa.

Religious Advocacy Lobbies in Washington

Lobbying for the Faithful is big business in Washington. In 1970 there were fewer than 40 religion-related advocacy groups seeking to influence Congress. Today there are 200 employing at least 1000 people writes the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life. Almost exclusively Conservative, these groups spend at least $390 million a year trying to influence public policy.

Fashion Femme Supreme Franca Sozzani

Industrie Issue 4 Cover: Vogue Italia Editor in Chief Franca Sozzani is styled by Katie Grand and lensed by Terry Richardson.

Example of why we love Sozani, from her blog 11-21-2011:

Pope Benedict XVI goes to Africa and speaks about the value of women, the need for their emancipation, and the importance of achieving equality between men and women.

Holy Father, wouldn’t be more important that the Church started taking action instead of theorizing?

Sounds good, Franca. How about some condoms to protect women from dying of AIDS, Holy Father? Anne

Dolce & Gabbana Tax Evasion Trial

The equivalent of Italy’s Supreme Court has overturned a lower court decision that absolved designers Stefano Gabbana and Domenico Dolce of tax evasion. Giuseppe Bana, lawyer for the designers’ accountant, Luciano Patelli, who is also indicted, told WWD he was “extremely surprised” by the Court’s ruling.

One of Italy’s most prominent design duos are accused of alleged tax evasion of $562 million. Simply stated, the case goes back to square one with a new judge and new beginning of judicial proceedings.

Mapplethorpe by Sofia Coppola

Filmmaker Sofia Coppola is the latest ‘creative visionary’ to interpret the work of Robert Mapplethorpe at the Thaddaeus Ropac gallery in Paris. Dazed Digital interviews Thaddaeus Ropac, who jumpstarted the careers of other experimental New York artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring.
