While Yves Saint Laurent was not the first designer to put women in a male-identified suit, Le Smoking was the first tuxedo specifically designed for women. In fact, the Parisian Yves Saint Laurent maison was financially prosperous in 1966, even though the initial Le Smoking dive into androgyny was a commercial flop. Exactly one suit was sold.
