Ulla Johnson Opens West Hollywood Kelly Wearstler-Designed Global Vibe Store
/Designer Ulla Johnson grew up in Manhattan but lived also ‘on the road’ as the daughter of archaelogists.
AOC immediately wants to know if Ulla traveled to the Cradle of Humankind in South Africa, a paleoanthropological site located about 50 km northwest of Johannesburg, South Africa, in the Gauteng province.
How about the Lake Turkana region of today’s Kenya, where the Leakey family discovered Lucy. Better yet, has Ulla Johnson been to the Omo Valley? Her clothes suggest ‘yes’.
For all these reasons, Anne has always experienced a love affair with Ulla Johnson’s clothes.
As a mother to Soren, now 17; Asher, 13; Agnes, 11 and a vizsla named Daphne, and wife to Zach Miner, Ulla Johnson has travelled her own road out of Brooklyn and now to the opening of new new store in West Hollywood.
In a Vogue interview with Lynn Yaeger around the opening of her first store in LA, this very weekend at 8823 Beverly Blvd, West Hollywood, CA 90048, Johnson shared:
When her daughter was an infant, Johnson made her way to Cuzco, once the center of the Inca empire. “People said you can’t take a six-week-old there, but I had my baby with me. The women there knit, the men weave. It was a major turning point in my career—I started working with artisans there, and in India.”
As Yaeger explains, for Ulla Johnson, “there’s no feminine without the feminist.”
Welcome to the world of Maria Grazia Chiuri. Gabriela Hearst, Angelina Jolie and Ulla Johnson. This is a human ‘sorority’ worth investigating, while carefully expanding the membership.

Ulla Johnson’s current pre-fall 2023 collection is featured in these images. Models Akon Changkou, Jan Baiboon and Shivaruby are styled by April Hughes, with newlywed Nadine Ijewere [IG] behind the lens.
We also share images from Ulla’s new LA store, designed by Kelly Wearstler.
In a WWD interview, Ulla explained her immediate connection with the star interiors designer.
"When I first started looking at spaces, I stayed at The Proper hotel in Santa Monica. And I just thought the design was quite incredible and that we were very like-minded," Johnson said of Wearstler and her work for the luxury hospitality group. "I recognized so many of the objects in her collections, there was a lot of incredible sourcing, and that is something I do also both with ready-to-wear and in my homes -- gathering and then making things feel different from their original context by putting them in a new environment."
