As a dedicated advocate for scoliosis awareness, Hunt is also Co-Executive Director of Enuval, a nonprofit committed to education, early detection and support. The article doesn’t actually explain what scoliosis is. You might know it by the phrase “curvature of the spine”.

Treatments are much easier today, but one of my closest friends was confined on her back in a full body cast and a rod in her spine for 15 months at about 10-12 years old. She says she nearly lost her mind. Her father was a championships-winning Black coach in Charleston, SC and he was a big factor in getting her through the ordeal. Her mom was also a teacher and P had the best care with only one brother in the house.

Granted my friend’s case was increasingly severe and at her age, a severe-impact, treatment decision had to be made or she would have been increasingly disabled. P fully recovered as a vibrant, very beautiful and successful woman. But she went through hell with scoliosis.
