Kaia in Vogue Spain on Cindy: "Why did I try so hard not to be like someone I admire so much?”
/Top talent, top model and top human dedicated to learning about our world, Kaia Gerber is absolutely a humanist ‘in the making’. From AOC’s pov, Gerber has already earned the ‘humanist’ descriptor.
Today Kaia Gerber covers the June 2025 issue of Vogue Spain, lensed by Amy Troost [IG]. Max Ortega styles the ‘Overcompensating’ [Amazon Prime] series actor in Altuzarra, Gabriela Hearst, Mango, Phoebe Philo, Prada, Sportmax and more. The extensive Mango selects are from Gerber’s current collab with the Spanish brand.
Whenever Kaia shows up, she’s rarely makes herself the center of attention — which is not to suggest that Gerber hasn’t become a ‘10 Fire Emojis’ public figure.
AOC wrote in 2020 that fashion media was pushing Kaia to be someone she wasn’t in that moment — the super femme or femme fatale or contemporary goddess.
AOC saw her potential, clearly. But her sensuality remained one of a very slow burn and it still does — some days. Recent images of Kaia are blockbuster in the sensuality department. Feeling empathy for the tightrope Gerber was walking at age 18, I wrote in 2020 about Kaia being thrust into the limelight and defined — not always on her terms.
Lit on ‘Ls’
Not only is Kaia lit, she’s lit on literature, learning, her Library Science [IG] bookclub and loving fellow humans very different from herself. The mega-talent in-the-making won AOC over in the i-D Spring 2020 Icons Issue, where Kaia Gerber chatted with her new friend and ‘Slave Play’ playwright Jeremy O. Harris.
Kaia’s Vogue Spain interview runs on an identical tract with AOC’s writing on her. It’s true that my mind is often much more European than American. The actor, literature lover and top model talent shares very unique insights into her relationship with mom Cindy Crawford.
Kaia and Cindy
"Well, there was a period in which I actively tried to differentiate myself from my mother and chart my own path," she recalls . . . "I think that resistance didn't help me find myself at all, because when you actively work against something, you get the opposite. Until one day I thought: "Why do I try so hard not to be like someone I admire so much? As soon as I stopped trying, the path revealed itself," she explains.
With regard to her emerging sensual goddess status, Kaia wore the boxy jacket with no pants in images that left her fellow big-talents, supermodels in the dust, in AOC’s opinion. Post is coming.
