In advance of his early 2025 Taschen retrospective, photographer Jamel Shabazz [IG] shot the fashion story for W Magazine “a stone’s throw” from the Brooklyn Museum, shortly after the closing of Jamel Shabazz: Faces and Places, 1980–2023.
Writing for the Brooklyn Museum, Corrine Segal chatted with the photographer in advance of his show.
In a separate interview, Jamel Shabazz speaks about his roots and growth as a photographer in the Brooklyn Museum’s ‘Reclaimed’ video series.
Capturing A Sorority of Women
Speaking to W Magazine about his enthusiasm in shooting the fashion story, Shabazz said:
“It’s not often that I get to shoot fashion for a publication,” he says of the pictures you see here. “Really, it’s a dream.” To prepare, Shabazz immersed himself in Gordon Parks’s photographs, with their juxtapositions of delicate frocks and delirious cityscapes, while keeping in mind the darkly dreamy tableaux of Helmut Newton. But ultimately, everything reverted to his enduring vision of community. “My objective was to create an image of diversity,” he says. “To portray a sorority of women giving each other strength.”
