To Newbold’s credit [as I would], she dates veils back into ancient times “when so-called untouched maidens were protected from evil spirits threatening to thwart their happiness.” I so love irreverent women. Many married women were also veiled, especially as a sign of upper class status and unavailability. The veiling of women generally and the unfettered rise of patriarchy are closely intertwined.
