Playing Dawn Staples in ‘The Smashing Machine’

Kaitlyn Lai interviews Emily Blunt, who declares that she is far too busy living life to curate it for the internet. Now that Blunt is 42, she has “mastered the art of giving zero ducks while thriving at full throttle.”

In October we will see Blunt in ‘The Smashing Machine’, where she plays Dawn Staples in the biographical sports drama film about her ex-husband, UFC champion Mark Kerr. Directed by Benny Safdie, the film explores the brutal and raw nature of MMA.

Mixed Martial Arts is a full-contact combat sport that combines striking, grappling, and submission techniques from multiple martial arts disciplines. It allows fighters to use a wide range of techniques, including punches, kicks, takedowns, and submissions, in both standing and ground fighting.

Blunt explains: “They (Mark and Dawn) had the full weather system of a relationship,” she shares. “I had to approach my character with a great deal of empathy. I had to be this person’s advocate. Dawn Staples is still alive, and I’ve become close to her. She’s an incredible person, and I wanted to be her advocate, even though she had done many things she regretted. Approaching her with empathy, even when she was wild and broken, was the needle to thread.”

Dawn’s ex-husband was soft-spoken, eloquent and unfailingly kind, in stark contrast to “the image of the guy with his fist in the air” who described to Blunt his fighting experience as primal and animalistic: “He could smell their sweat, what they’d eaten for breakfast, even the iron in their blood.”

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson Plays Mark Kerr

Mark Kerr is played by Emily Blunt’s longtime friend and co-star Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson. Blunt and Johnson have significant mutual trust in each other, which was required to portray a high-combustion relationship that was searingly contentious and then “filled with love, connection, and intimacy.”

Both Blunt and Johnson committed themselves to being vulnerable, and it shows in the finished film, according to the cover star.

For Blunt, she has played the sidelined wife in back-to-back films. In summer 2024, her role was Kitty Oppenheimer, whose husband and American physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer led the development of an atomic weapon during World War II at Los Alamos, N.M.

Playing Emily Charlton, Blunt’s A Sidelined Wife No More

The actor was surely ready to return to the screen as Emily Charlton on the set of ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’, where she’s no longer Miranda Priestly’s assistant. Instead, Charlton goes head to head with Priestly as they compete for advertising revenue in a declining print media market, and Priestly is nearing retirement.
