Now age 39, Shayk shares her thoughts that the fashion industry is less ageist than when Irina launched her career.
Shayk’s international breakthrough came in 2007, when she was featured in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. She became the face of lingerie-brand Intimissimi, replacing Ana Beatriz Barros In 2008, becoming the official ambassador for Intimissimi in 2010.
Irina launched in a major Guess S/S 2008 campaign with model Jon Kortajarena in a multi-year relationship. Shayk also began modeling regularly for Macy’s, making a decision that many fashion voices believe hampered her future desirability among luxury brands.
By 2011 the Russian model winner of "Miss Chelyabinsk 2004" beauty contest, now an IMG model since May 2009, covered the SI Swimsuit issue as the first Russian model to do so. The mother of one daughter Lea, born in her relationship with actor Bradley Cooper, Irina has spoken about being mistaken as a South American model.
"My father was dark skinned, because he was Tatar, sometimes Tatars can look Brazilian... I get my light eyes from my mother." While Volga Tartars are the largest portion of Muslims in Russia, Irina has never discussed publicly her own religious beliefs or her father’s.
