Adwoa Aboah in 'Fresh Take' by Ronan McKenzie for Net-A-Porter August 21, 2023
/Top model, social activist and Gurl Talk founder Adwoa Aboah makes an absolutely-lovely, up-front-and-personal, “I’ve got this” appearance in Net-a-Porter’s August 21st fashion pages.
We have some utterly gorgeous images of Aboah, lensed by Ronan McKenzie [IG]. Neutral fashion stories shot in the studio against a blank white wall rarely resonate with high visual impact. In all candor, AOC is rarely inspired by them.
What an exception we have here — and perfection [another word AOC rarely uses] is in the house. All the tones are harmonious and elegant. Aboah could light up a cigar in this moment, like some seven-figure, boys club lawyer — and she is believable. She’s taken the male gaze and turned it inside out on a journey to self-love that has been challenging at times.
Stylist Helen Broadfoot chooses from Balenciaga, Courrèges, Dolce & Gabbana, Khaite, Saint Laurent, The Row and more.
Her Gurls Talk podcast will resume this fall [2023], with all previous episodes available on the website. On this August Wednesday afternoon, they are not there yet.
In 2022, Aboah’s acting classes paid off with her debut in the much-loved east London-based drama ‘Top Boy’. And she tells her ‘Fresh Take’ interviewer Liv Little that high on her list of priorities is doing a ‘TED Talk’. We are certain that it can be arranged and not at a local level.
Chris Anderson [CEO of TED], if you’re listening, Adwoa Aboah would like to speak at TED2024: The Brave and the Brilliant, April 15-19, 2024 in Vancouver, BC, Canada. ‘The Brave and the Brilliant’ is a perfect forum for her.
Adwoa Aboah describes her turning to acting in this way:
“There’s a shift in my own life that works next to this new branch of my career. I think it all feels more enjoyable,” she says. “I’m in it for different reasons [now]. It’s not a want for more bold and materialistic things.”
Aboah and her boyfriend Daniel Wheatley have been going strong since 2020. One look on his IG says it all.
Bottom line, Adwoa Aboah is done being a tortured soul.
What a precious delight to find her in this seemingly calm place with her successful family and friends. Aboah’s rise was tied to both soon-departing British Vogue EIC Edward Enninful and also Meghan, Duchess of Sussex.
For her to be plunging into change and self-evolution — not really self-invention — puts her in sync with the larger cast of her crew mates in life. This is probably the most positive interview with Adwoa Aboah that AOC has read and written about.
May the force be with you, Adwoa. The entire Net-a-Porter team dropped one incredible, inspiring fashion story ‘Fresh Take’ this week. ~ Anne
