Renowned for its unspoiled beauty and rich history, Hydra is home to some of the most tranquil and inviting waters in the Mediterranean.

Just writing these words transports me back to my first trip sailing in an unpretentious boat in the Ionian Sea. Sleeping in Ithaca, my unconscious mind came alive with vivid dreams inspired by the stories of human civilization buried in these waters.

However, Malgosia is calling us to Hydra, and we must meet her there, as she herself takes the plunge into a sea of wellness and tranquility.

The first enchanting aspect of Hydra's waters is their celestial hue. A striking shade of azure, they effortlessly merge with the cerulean sky, creating a breathtaking panorama that stretches as far as the eye can see. Whether one is peering from the harbor or meandering along sun-dappled stone paths, the allure of the glistening waters is impossible to ignore.

What I want to know is if we can buy the juciest fresh oranges, fresh honey and bread for breakfast.

It’s a day to enjoy Hydra's aquatic delights: exceptional snorkeling and diving spots. Submerged beneath the gentle waves lie mystical underwater caves, where stalactites gracefully hang from the ceilings, illuminated by the ethereal glow of sunlight filtering through the water.

Dare to venture deeper into and you will find yourself amidst a vibrant marine ecosystem, teeming with colorful fish, undulating sea plants, and majestic sea turtles, gracefully gliding through their natural habitat.

For those seeking tranquility and a peaceful escape, Hydra's secluded coves and beaches beckon, but even the streets are free of cars and motorbikes and stop lights.

Pack a sturdy pair of walking shoes, as some of these hidden gems are nestled in remote corners, away from the bustling harbor. Feel the softness of the sand beneath your toes and cast your gaze out to the horizon, as shades of turquoise blend harmoniously, creating an idyllic symphony of colors. Bask in the gentle sea breeze, embrace the sun's warm caress, and let the rhythmic lapping of the waves soothe your soul until you are convinced that this incredible environment is only a daydream, a state of being that can’t possibly be real.

For the more adventurous, A-type, competitive spirits, Hydra reveals yet another facet: the opportunity to indulge in exhilarating water sports. From paddleboarding to kayaking and everything in between, the island offers numerous options for those seeking an adrenaline rush. Glide along the water's surface, feel the invigorating spray against your skin, and allow your spirit to soar as you embrace the elemental force that surrounds you. And they do have parasailing — another story from a different part of the world that taught me many years ago, not to be afraid of the unknown.

Our journey is much too short, and Malgosia suggests that we can stay on longer, when I explain this was only a day trip. It’s worth considering, don’t you think? I could be easily convinced. ~ Anne
