Louis Vuitton x Yayoi Kusama Taps Cate Blanchett & Justin Timberlake + 4 | May 2023 New York Opening Awaits
/Louis Vuitton taps six new talents and image-makers to its second drop in the Louis Vuitton x Yayoi Kusama 2023 collaboration.
Mega stars Australian actor Cate Blanchett and Amercan music artist Justin Timberlake, a ‘friend of the house’ but not an ambassador, are joined by South Korean actor HoYeon Jung, French actor Lea Seydoux, tennis pro Naomi Osaka and Chinese actor Zhou Congyu.
Kusama’s signature pumpkin artwork moves into the spotlight, with January drop Louis Vuitton x Yayoi Kusama dots receeding in the new ‘Creating Infinity’ collection.
Photographer Steven Meisel is again behind the lens with Carine Roitfeld in charge of styling. Creative Director Ferdinando Verderi worked with makeup artist Pat McGrath to create henna-like tattoos on the faces and bodies of the talents that twin the artworks decorating their corresponding Capucines and Monogram handbags.
This uber-sophisticated, artistic effect warants major applause for being totally fabulous in a modern way, while channeling ancient beauty art techniques. An entire pumpkin patch is growing on Timberlake’s arm, while not-subtle floral designs sprawl across Blanchett’s jaw, neck and face to her cheekbone.
This second major collaboration between Louis Vuitton and artist Yayoi Kusama happens a decade later from the first one, organized by Mark Jacobs, who was then the creative director of Louis Vuitton. The 2012 mega-hit, art meets fashion event launched with Kusama’s 2012 retrospective at New York City’s Whitney Museum of American Art.
This time, two major Yayoi Kusama art shows support the Louis Vuitton fashion event launch. ‘Yayoi Kusama: 1945 to Now’ at M+ in Hong Kong runs through May 14, 2023.
ART SG 2023 happened in January, promoting itself in Singapore as the most important global art fair in Southeast Asia. Artworks by Kusama were on sale, with prices ranging from $155,00 to $840,000.
Visitors to the fair were aware of the Louis Vuitton x Yayoi Kusama collaboration and expressed mixed reviews. AOC is trying to verify the artist’s sales in Singapore, before she opens her May show in New York City.
Given her age of 93, it’s difficult to believe that the exposure will hurt the value of her art. Note that some art critics have just savaged this collaboration and issued significant criticism about the quality of drop one merchandise.
Yayoi Kusama will open her largest exhibition in New York on May 12. Her exhibition, titled “I Spend Each Day Embracing Flowers,” will include new paintings, sculptures featuring her signature flower and pumpkin motifs and a new Infinity Mirrored Room.
David Zwirner’s West 19th and West 20th street galleries will host the event. After reviewing more Yayoi Kusama exhibits coming in 2023, a second post is required. This is incredible.
The expansive exposure of her work prompted me to verify AOC’s assumption that Kusama is considered to be the most successful living woman artist.
That is true — that Kusama is the world’s most successful woman artist. And she does indeed influence the entire world, which is part of her enormous influence.
The new Louis Vuitton x Yayoi Kusama ‘Creating Infinity’ campaign appears on billboards Wednesday, March 22. The second drop products will be available in Louis Vuitton stores worldwide on March 31.
