Matthew M. Williams and Josh Smith
Givenchy Creative Director Matthew M. Williams enjoyed a deep collaboration with American artist Josh Smith in the development of the Spring 2022 collections.
Josh Smith’s ceramic sculptures and Grim Reaper paintings are rendered in vibrant, joyous colors — smatterings of which appear in the campaign images. Givenchy features black and other dark neutrals in the ad campaign.
This next ready-to-wear runway collage image — not included in the campaign — gives us a deeper understanding of the Josh Smith - Matthew M. Williams design synergy. New-York-based Josh Smith is represented by the David Zwirner gallery — who also features images from his Givenchy collab on Josh Smith’s artist bio page. Such exposure represents major synergy in the world of art and fasion.
Speaking of his collaboration with the artist, Williams said:
“It was incredible to partner so closely with Josh–someone whose electric work and unencumbered perspective I’ve long admired–on all aspects of this collection including this campaign. To me, his artistic vision represents Givenchy’s modern ethos, and I’m grateful that Josh has let me–and, now, so many others–fully step into and explore his world.” ~ Matthew M. Williams
Givenchy’s Kenny Bag
The ‘Kenny’, a bag named after Kendall herself — yes, her nickname is Kenny — is sold in a variety of colorways. Considered a standout piece of the new spring 2022 season, Givenchy’s Kenny bag channels global scene nights out clubbing from the early aughts.
The Kenny signature and will-be iconic hardware is front and center, while its softly draped construction embraces the brand’s couture-meets-street mentality. Williams tapped Kendall and sisters Kylie and Kim to model his first Givenchy collection, and Kendall accompanied the designer to the 2021 Met Gala.
‘Kenny’ made an equally big splash, with Kendall carrying her red Kenny to a Met Gala after party.
The Givenchy Spring-Summer 2022 designs of creative director Matthew M. Wiliams feature peplum tailoring, form-fitting ribbed knits, pieced pleating, and lavish embellishment.
