More about Nina Ricci.
Creative partners and life partners, too, Lisi Herrebrugh and Rushemy Botter arrived as incoming creative directors at Nina Ricci, coming from Antwerp. The creators of menswear brand Botter won the 2018 Festival d’Hyères’s Grand Prize, led by designer Haider Ackermann, Delfina Delettrez Fendi, Farida Khelfa, and Lou Doillon. Their Botter collection “paid tribute to their mutual Caribbean heritage and addressed cultural issues of gender fluidity with a sense of humor,” wrote Vogue about the honor.
The partners share a multi-cultural energy and design fusion approach. Botter grew up in Curaçao, and Herrebrugh has lived between the Netherlands and the Dominican Republic
“We chose them for the generosity of their work,” Ackermann said backstage, “for the sense of history embedded in their collection and for the cultural meaning that resonates in today’s world. Their message is very actual, deeply human, and touching. Their energy is incredible, as is their sense of sharing and of community.”
Paper Magazine interviewed the couple in August 2019, as they sank roots into their new creative life in Paris. Nicole Phelps reviewed this Spring 2020 Collection for Vogue. Her last paragraph — written in September 2019 — seems prophetic. AOC will check in on the duo inn the coming days, because there is something very special going on here. Oh look! Here comes that joy word again! It’s contagious.
Botter and Herrebrugh are the most earnest of beginners. Their experiments are to be applauded, even those that weren’t successful. Something they definitely got right was their instinct for effervescence, especially in the current moment when we’re confronted with so much difficulty. Joy is a quality to build on.
