Carey Mulligan in 'Less Is More' by Rory Payne for Porter Edit April 6, 2020

British actor Carey Mulligan covered the April 6 issue of Porter Edit, styled by Cathy Kasterine in  Alaïa, Bottega Veneta, Gabriela Hearst, JW Anderson, Loewe, Miu Miu, Proenza Schouler and more. Rory Payne lensed by fashion shoot, with an interview by Ajesh Patalay.

In her latest film, ‘Promising Young Woman’, Carey Mulligan has the starring role with a female-led team headlined by director and writer Emerald Fennell and the Margot Robbie co-founded production company Lucky Chap Entertainment.

The film had its world premiere at Sundance on January 25, 2020. It was scheduled to be released on April 17, 2020. As of this writing, there is no new release date.

Mulligan plays Cassie Thomas, a medical school dropout engaging in seemingly self-destructive behavior after a life event in medical school. Cassie has weaponized this experience into a 5-star revenge life drama, pretending to be blackout drunk in an effort to lure men into taking advantage of her — when she is unquestionably unable to give sexual consent.

In the making of this movie bouquet, some cast members actually thought they were making a sequel to ‘When Harry Met Sally’. The romance is real, but it floats in a narrative structure that is a “black comedy about revenge, sexual assault and toxic masculinity.”

“Emerald was very deliberate about not putting anything in the film that we haven’t seen in a rom-com or bro-comedy in the past 20 years,” Mulligan tells Patalay.

“Emerald’s [point] was: if [you] take someone home and they are really drunk, and then that person reveals they are not drunk, and you feel guilty, then you know what you are doing isn’t right,” she explained.
