Gigi Hadid’s Vogue Czechoslovakia May 2018 cover story is out and it’s a beauty. Jan Králíček styles Gigi in noble origins horsewoman looks — after all, Gigi loves horses. Helena Christensen uses her camera to create pure poetry in what becomes a very serious discussion of sustainability, as yet another magazine weaves serious discussions around fashion editorials.
In this case Vogue Czech editor-in-chief Andrea Běhounková writes an indepth letter about sustainability: (English translation), ending it after talking about the water used to make one single cotton shirt and the overall role of fashion in polluting the planet:

I was about to check if Helena made the shoot near her country house in upstate New York, but it sounds likely that the group congregated at Gigi’s family country house not far from my beloved Carversville. De Young Museum's 'Contemporary Muslim Fashion' Exhibit Opens To Protests In Frankfurt
San Francisco’s de Young museum presented a paradigm-busting show titled ‘Contemporary Muslim Fashions’ that opened September 22, 2018 and closed Januaryn 6, 2019. The exhibit challenged museum-goers to “explore the rich diversity of one of the fastest-growing fashion sectors today” — modest fashion.
In an examination of Muslim dress codes worldwide, trom those who cover their heads to those who do not, the exhibit sought to draw attention to contemporary Muslim life.
The exhibit has now moved to the Museum Angewandte Kunst in Frankfurt.

Eating Insects Has Long Made Sense in Africa. The World Must Catch Up.
Scientists have long proposed insects as feed or foodstuff for animals. But views about entomophagy differ widely: food conscious lobbies and scientists promote insects as novel foods while at the other extreme people view eating insects as crazy. Between those two extremes are communities that have been practising entomophagy for ages.
Most edible insects are harvested from the wild. Little effort has been put into how they could be mass produced and used as a source of protein more generally. To do this, it’s important that the biodiversity of edible insects is understood better, and that indigenous knowledge is uncovered.

‘Too Many Elephants’ in Africa? Here’s How Peaceful Coexistence with Human Communities Can Help
Africa’s elephant population has plummeted from roughly a million in 1970 to around 400,000 today – a decline which is largely blamed on poaching for their ivory tusks. At its peak in 2011, poaching claimed 36,000 elephants a year, or one every 15 minutes.
Many of us are familiar with these statistics thanks to campaigns to end the ivory trade. But with our attention focused on poaching, an arguably greater threat to Africa’s elephants has emerged. In the time that Africa’s elephant population has crashed, its human population has boomed. The number of people living in Africa has doubled since 1982, reaching a billion in 2009, and is expected to double again by 2050.
To feed and house this growing population, natural habitats have been fragmented by roads and railways and entire swathes have been converted to farmland and settlements. As a result, Africa’s elephants have been squeezed into smaller and increasingly isolated pockets of land. It’s very possible that the future for all of Africa’s elephants will resemble what is currently seen in South Africa.
