In a series of coincidences that are peppered throughout my life, scientists have threaded another needle in the highly-probable story that human life originated in the region of Lake Turkana bordering Kenya and Ethiopia before migrating into a region known today as The Levant.
In a very real sense, today’s religious wars are going on in the very region that is the cradle of human civilization. My own relationship with The Levant area is most focused on studying the evolution of the goddesses and the rise of monotheism.
Kenya, Lake Turkana and the Omo Valley people of Ethiopia are a much stronger connection — one revealed through my inexplicable connections with the young photographer Dan Eldon. Here is a sampling of our journey.

Aphrodite Joins Mami Wata For A Swim in Human Consciousness AOC Sensual Rebel Nov. 2009
Men have always been ambivalent about mermaids, the mythological aquatic creature with a female human head and torso but the tail of a fish. In many ancient cultures, mermaids were regarded as semi-divine aspects of the Goddess.
Carl Jung’s theory of the feminine unconscious describes this oceanic-subterranean womb of creation as an unfathomable place of ancient wisdom but also fear.
The first known mermaid stories appeared in Assyria, ca. 1000 BC. The goddess Atargatis, mother of Assyrian queen Semiramis, loved a mortal shepherd and unintentionally killed him.
Distraught and ashamed, Atargatis jumped into a lake to take the form of a fish, but the waters would not conceal her divine beauty. Thereafter, she took the form of a mermaid—human above the waist, fish below—though the earliest representations of Atargatis showed her as a fish with a human head and legs, similar to the Babylonian Ea. The Greeks recognized Atargatis under the name Derketo.
Prior to 546 BC, the Milesian philosopher Anaximander proposed that mankind had sprung from an aquatic species of animal. The scientist and highly-regarded critical thinker thought that humans, with their extended infancy, could not have survived otherwise.

Israeli researchers published a critical article this week, arguing that a 55,000 years-old, female skull found in the Manot Cave of Israel’s Western Galilee is a crucial link in understanding the evolution of the human species. Scientists believe that the skull offers definitive proof that anatomically modern humans coexisted with Neanderthals in the same geographical area.
It’s widely accepted science that human origins date back about 200,000 years to Africa. However, there has not been agreement about which migration model of early Homo sapiens led to the population of our planet, accompanied by the extinction of Neanderthals.
The morphology of the skull indicates that it is that of a modern human of African origin, bearing characteristics of early European Upper Palaeolithic populations. This suggests that the Levantine populations were ancestral to earlier European populations,” said Prof. (Israel) Hershkovitz (of Tel Aviv University). “This study also provides important clues regarding the likely inbreeding between anatomically modern humans and Neanderthals.”
The Manot Cave, where the skull was unearthed, was discovered accidentally in 2008 when a bulldozer struck the cave roof, revealing a time capsule tens of thousands of years old. “This is a goldmine,” said Prof. Hershkovitz. “Most other caves are ‘disturbed caves,’ but this is untouched, frozen in time — truly an amazing find. Among other artefacts found there, the skull, which we dated to 55,000 years ago using uranium thorium methods, was astonishing. It provides insight into the beginnings of the dispersal of modern humans all over the world.”
South African Photographer Koto Bolofo Intrigues Me With Numéro #160 'Atelier D'Artiste'
/Aneta Pajak In Atelier D’Artiste By Koto Bolofo For Numéro #160 February 2015
Visual cues run wild in these images: is Aneta exploring a gender-neutral, artistic studio or is she in the fashion-predictable studio of a male artist? Is she the prototypical muse of the male mind? What is the significance of a large — presumably male — hand at her throat and in her face? How has this male artistic vision — and the powerful art world institutions behind it — defined Aneta and millions — no billions — of female identities worldwide and for the last 3000 years?
There are no answers in ‘Atelier D’Artiste’, a Numéro #160 February 2015 fashion editorial that may be nothing more than a celebration of the male mind and fashion’s support for traditional gender-based power relationships. This isn’t how these images strike me, however.
Do I share a vibe with photographer Koto Bolofo? Rest assured that I will answer that question for myself and AOC readers. ~ Anne
Boys Club | Blogger Raif Badawi Case Referred Back To Saudi Supreme Court
/
The second lashing of Saudi blogger and father of three young daughters Raif Badawi has been sent back to Saudi Arabia’s Supreme Court. Badawi was not flogged yesterday, based on a doctor’s assertion that it might kill him, after last week’s 50 lashes.
Given the lack of a penal code in the Saudi court system, we’re not exactly sure what this means. All are hopeful, however, for the release of Raif Badawi.
The current punishment calls for Raif Badawi to receive 1000 lashes over a period of 20 consecutive weeks, along with 10 years in prison and a fine of about $260,000. Badawi, 31, was found guilty of offences related to his blog, the Saudi Free Liberals Forum, as well as accusations that he insulted Islam.
Protests erupted worldwide and on AOC, as news of the punishment came via UK’s Amnesty International. To add insult to injury, Saudi leaders marched in Paris last Sunday in support of free speech. Thankfully, the whole world was watching the ultimate in national hypocrisy by the Saudi government!
Protests to free Raif Badawi erupted around the world in front of Saudi embassies. Ensaf Haidar, the blogger’s wife, believes that if leaders such as UK Prime Minister David Cameron and — presumably — US Secretary of State John Kerry put pressure on the Saudi government, her husband would be deported to join her in Quebec, Canada.
Haidar and their three children fled to Canada after a Saudi cleric issued a fatwa against her husband in 2011, leading to an attempt on his life. The Guardian writes:
Haidar revealed that because of the attention the case was getting she had to tell her young children – Najwa, 11, Terad, 10, and Miriam, seven – what was happening. “Raif is all over the internet, so I wanted them to hear from their mother and not from someone they don’t know. It was very hard for them to understand. It’s a very brutal thing for children to hear and they were very sad. They had a lot of questions and they were very worried for him.”
Haidar’s own family have been forced to disown her and Badawi’s father had to appear on Saudi television to condemn his son – the Saudi authorities will punish entire families of those they see as dissidents.

Anne of Carversville: Telling Women’s Stories From Fashion to Flogging
Anne of Carversville has a long history of writing about the conflict of civilizations colliding and the fundamentalists at work in each of them. We are as concerned about the spread of Christian fundamentalism in America as Islamic fundamentalism in Paris.
My own editorial position is not one of being anti-Islamic. I am anti-fundamentalist because adherents of those principles do not believe in free societies. British radical Muslim cleric and lecturer on sharia law Anjem Choudary has written an open letter, published by USA Today, in which he says:
“Contrary to popular misconception, Islam does not mean peace but rather means submission to the commands of Allah alone. Therefore, Muslims do not believe in the concept of freedom of expression, as their speech and actions are determined by divine revelation and not based on people’s desires.”
Soul Spirit Beauty
Being committed to the women of Sudan — to the 40,000 of them that are brutally lashed every year for inappropriate dress and without the world rallying of their behalf as we are for Saudi blogger Raif Badawi — I want to share extraordinary images of the beautiful Sudanese model Ataui Deng, originally from Sudan. (See more on flogging women in Sudan here.)
At this moment, it’s easy for me to explain what ‘fashion to flogging’ is all about at AOC. As Smart Sensuality women and men, we understand that images of Ataui are considered to be heresy in the world of Anjem Choudary.
We see only beauty and not disrespect of any kind in these photographs. And we share a collective belief in self-moderation and democracy — not the lash — as our guide for living and advancing humanity in the 21st century. ~ Anne

Lady Liberty Collides With Fundamentalist Hardliners In Paris
Our thoughts are with the people of Paris today, the dead satirists who pushed the envelope of free speech and free expression will speak no more, although a request has gone global for media outlets to publish the anti-Islamic, Charlie Hebdo cartoons tomorrow.
Anne of Carversville will not be among them, as I am blacklasted in the Arab world already and my focus is women’s rights. If Islamists had launched a terrorist attack against the women of Paris for not wearing burquas, we would print anything needed against these brutes who kidnap little girls and decapitate aid workers on international TV.
Probably no single issue in France has done more to divide Muslims and non-Muslims than the burqa ban, a topic at the core of Anne of Carversville’s values and dialogue with women worldwide. Read on for a look at AOC’s long history on the topic of banning burqas in France.

Pope Francis Delivers Blistering Rebuke to Roman Curia
Pope Francis delivered a stunning pre-Christmas speech to officials of the Roman Curia, accusing them of succumbing to greed, jealousy, hypocrisy, cowardice and “spiritual Alzheimer’s”.
If the NYPD felt that New York cops were the most beleaguered and unappreciated work force in the world, they had major company among the Roman Curia, after Pope Francis challenged the prelates to make “a real examination of conscience.”
The popular CEO pope basically accused his workforce of a host of deadly “illnesses”, including the fault of feeling “immortal, immune or even indispensable”. Not stopping there, Pope Francis accused the prelates of pursuing wealth, showing off and leading double lives in a mindset leading to “existential schizophrenia”.
Prior to the papal tongue lashing, Pope Francis gave a speech of gratitude to the lay Vatican staff including gardeners and cleaners — with whom the pope often grabs lunch. In great contrast, he asked “forgiveness for the shortcomings of my colleagues and myself, as well as for some scandals, which do great harm. Forgive me.”

For the past six years, AOC has followed the Vatican’s investigation of American nuns, a report that has ended with a generally positive report under the guidance of Pope Francis and not the more authoritarian Pope Benedict.
Alas for AOC, the report comes at a time when I have not only returned from a difficult 2014 and actual hiatus from writing, but also in the midst of a major move of AOC articles into a much simpler organizational format. All of my RedTracker writing on feminism in America, international feminism, religion and women, the lives of women in Africa and the Middle East, female sexuality, women and philanthropy has been moved — but not properly tagged — into my Sensual Rebel blog. Therefore, I can’t link to all the tagged writing at AOC about the Catholic Church and the investigation of American nuns. It’s a goal to complete this tagging by Jan. 1.
These moves are a larger part of my own second look at what AnneofCarversville.com should be to readers going forward. I will explain the new (old) strategy in a separate post.

Best Wishes For Wall Street
Eight Things I Wish for Wall Street Bloomberg View
BoingBoing directed me to Michael Lewis’ new prescription list for Wall Street, along with this priceless view of Arturo Di Modica’s ‘Charging Bull’, located in front of the New York Stock Exchange.
3. Women will henceforth make all Wall Street trading decisions.
Men are more prone to financial risk-taking, and overconfidence, and so will be banned from even secondary roles on Wall Street trading desks — though they will be permitted to do whatever damage they would like in their private investment accounts. Trading is a bit like pornography: Women may like it, but they don’t like it nearly as much as men, and they certainly don’t like it in ways that create difficulties for society. Put them in charge of all financial decision-making and the decisions will be more boring, but more sociable. Of course, this raises a practical question: How will our society find enough women older than 35, with no special intellectual ability, to fill all of Wall Street’s trading jobs? Well …
4. Wall Street will take the resources it once hurled at Harvard and Yale universities, to recruit their students, and invest in America’s leading retirement communities, to recruit their swelling population of elderly women, most of whom are currently wasting valuable trading hours.
Lenman Sisters Wouldn’t Have Failed Big Think
Writer John Cookson explains why women are probably better constituted biochemically to work on Wall Street as traders and fund managers. You see, men tend to go all hormonal!
Men’s cortisol levels respond very powerfully from competitive situations, and women not so much. Women’s cortisol responses and stress responses seem more powerful from social stressors.” According to this theory, which (John) Coates has begun testing, a male’s cortisol-fueled stress response might exacerbate a bear or middling market by responding with skewed memories and anxiety to events, whereas a female risk response would be more stable across a variety of circumstances.
The numbers don’t lie, says Coates. “Women have been found over a long period of time to outperform men by up to two percent return—which is a lot,” he says. According to BusinessWeek, hedge funds run by women turned an annual rate of return of 9% between 2000 and 2009—versus 5.82% from funds run by men over the same period. A study by U.C. Davis researchers also found that men in the financial industry make 45 percent more trades than their female counterparts do—a gap that reduces their net returns by 2.65 percentage points per year compared with the 1.72 percentage points women lose on their trading fees.

Bill Cosby Drugged Me. This Is My Story Vanity Fair
Model Beverly Johnson beat back her own demons, ignoring finally the voices in her head saying: “Black men have enough enemies out there already, they certainly don’t need someone like you, an African American with a familiar face and a famous name, fanning the flames.”
Beverly Johnson says that the world can add her name to the list of women drugged but NOT successfully raped by Bill Cosby because by the time she called him a motherfucker for the fifth time, he yanked her down his brownstone stairs and threw her into a cab.
For a long time I thought it was something that only happened to me, and that I was somehow responsible. So I kept my secret to myself, believing this truth needed to remain in the darkness. But the last four weeks have changed everything, as so many women have shared similar stories, of which the press have belatedly taken heed.
Beverly Johnson concludes her story, saying that she has agreed to serve on the board of the Barbara Sinatra Center for Abused Children, where many of the young children have been sexually abused.

To quote another guru of modern culture (Marshall McLuhan) the medium is the message: what you do is less important than how you transmit it. If you make street art you instantly, by that act, proclaim so many hip affinities that your art becomes a symbol of widely admired associations and meanings. All graffiti is cool. The form, not the content, defines that coolness. Calling out Banksy as a bad artist is therefore impossible. If you say he’s crap, he will turn out to be in on the joke. Navy investigating taping of female officers in submarine showers The Florida Times Union
Lt. leslie Hubbell has confirmed that a joint command and Navy Criminal investigation has commenced to investigate claims that a 2nd class petty officer secretly videotaped women officers showering aboard the USS Wyoming, a submarine ported at Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base.
Ballistic missile subs typically carry a crew of up to 15 officers and 140 enlisted personnel. Officers share bathing facililities with a sign system indicating when a woman is using the facilities.
The Navy Times reports that videos are believed to show at least three female officers while showering or undressed. It possible that men were also videotaped, but their videos were apparently not distributed.
A retired female supply officer of lieutenant rank, formerly tasked with acting as a mentor to female serving on the submarines “recalled her first day on a sub when a young male sailor came into her stateroom and asked, “Where are the females?”
“I looked at him and said, ‘All right, let’s get one thing straight: They’re not females, they’re junior officers on this boat, they’re division officers, and you will address them as Ensign So-and-So, and you can tell everybody else on the boat,’ ” she said.

Navy Revokes Bill Cosby’s Honorary Title WSJ
The US Navy has revoked comedian Bill Cosby’s honorary title as chief petty officer, as sexual abuse and sexual assault charges — including numerous charges of rape — mount against the 77-year-old comedian.
Navy officials said they were stripping Mr. Cosby of the honorary title because the allegations “conflict with the Navy’s core values of honor, courage and commitment.”
The decision comes the day after three of Cosby’s accusers have launched a drive with lawyer Gloria Allred, who told the comedian to create a $100 million fund for his victims or face new lawsuits.
Mr. Cosby was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1960 as a 3rd Class Petty Officer after serving four years as a hospital corpsman. In 2011, Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus made Mr. Cosby an honorary chief petty officer.
