DNA Research Explains Giraffes' Long Necks As Global Population Plummets 40%
/DNA Research Explains Giraffes' Long Necks As Global Population Plummets 40%
The research team in Tazania believes that the most important take-away from the four-year study is to highlight the critical importance of giraffe conservation. It's estimated that the global giraffe population has fallen 40 percent in just 15 years. Statistically giraffes are more endangered than elephants.
If elephants are threatened by an international demand for ivory, giraffes are threatened with extinction because of the local market for 'bush meat' and demand for skins in the luxury market. Not all species of giraffes are equally threatened.

A special surprise came with the announcement that Marilyn Minter had been working with Miley Cyrus and Marc Jacobs in an entirely new art project to benefit the organization Planned Parenthood of New York.
In March, the Minter/Cyrus duo met to create a steamy photo entitled 'Miley' (2016). The limited-edition print of 50 is face-mounted on UV Plexiglass, signed by creators, and sold through Artsy for $5,500 with the proceeds benefitting Planned Parenthood.
Designer Marc Jacobs joined the fundraiser, releasing two different limited-edition T-shirts for men and women for $50 -- 'Miley Hearts Planned Parenthood'. The shirts are available at MarcJacobs.com and in select boutiques.
'Eclipsed' Tony-Nominated Danai Gurira Joins The Edit's The New Hollywood Lineup
/'Eclipsed' Tony-Nominated Danai Gurira Joins The Edit's The New Hollywood Lineup
Gucci Creative Director Alessandro Michele joins stylist Tracy Taylor for The Edit's May 12 issue with its focus on 'The New Hollywood'. Photographer Bjorn Iooss flashes six creatives including Gillian Jacobs, Sonoya Mizuno, Elizabeth Debicki, Meera Menon, Ellie Bamber, and Danai Gurira in the all-Gucci feature.
Of special interest to AOC readers is Danai Gurira, a Zimbabwean actress and playright, who has mounted Broadway's first-ever all-female, women of color production called 'Eclipsed'. Our beloved muse Lupita Nyong'o is quoted by The Edit, describing Danai:
“In Eclipsed, Danai exposed the true pain of war. Performing it has been one of the most emotionally exhausting and rewarding experiences of my life. I thank the brilliant Danai for writing such an essential, powerful, funny and moving story, which forces me to dig down to my core every night.”
U2's Bono joined 'The Walking Dead' actor and 'Eclipsed' playwright, who also serves as an ambassador of the ONE Campaign, an organization he co-founded. The human rights activist was introduced by Lupita Nyong'o:
"We’ve asked (Bono) to join us today to launch our effort to bring direct attention to the challenges faced by millions of girls all over the world living under the tyranny of war, in poverty and being denied their human rights simply because they are female," Nyong'o told Saturday's audience. "From here on out, each performance will be dedicated to specific girls from around the world who have been kidnapped and are still missing."
Sandibe Okavango Safari Lodge In Botswana's Okavango Delta Is A Jewel Of Sustainability & Femininity
/Sandibe Okavango Safari Lodge In Botswana’s Okavango Delta Is A Jewel Of Sustainability & Femininity
It’s been six years since AOCwrote about Botswana’s lush Okavango Delta. What a pleasure to see these female-centric, goddess-inspired images of Sandibe Okavango Safari Lodge, designed by Michaelis Boyd and Nick Plewman, and set adjacent to the wildlife-rich Moremi Game Reserve.
Not only does the building blend in with the local landscape, but its 12 inner suites take on the appearance of weaverbird nests. Indeed the structures are cathedral-like, all designed to inspire and honor our inner nature goddess — for women and men alike.
Sandibe Okavango Safari Lodge in part of the & Beyond community. a group of luxury ‘boutique’ safari lodges designed to be in complete harmony with the latest goals of sustainability hotel communities.
In a long list of accomplishments, Botswana has much to celebrate. Thanks to years of political stability and a farsighted conservation policy by the government, Botswana’s ecosystem is stable. More than a third of the country is protected in a luxury tourism model. Higher prices guarantee less wear and tear on the environment. The practice is elitist but working.

Note | Nudity Just last night I was in a FB group on women’s issues. Someone gifted us a banner, in fact installed it without discussion, and first one woman and then others said “these images don’t look like anyone in this room. We’re not 15 and flawless. We’re 50 and fabulous!”
The June issue of Vogue Germany presents ‘The Naked Truth’ featuring Nadja Aurermann, Toni Garrn, Luca Gajdus, Julia Drews, Katrin Thormann, Karine Krawczuk, Donata Wenders, Hanna Wahmer, Christiane Arp and Nina Hoss lensed for real by Peter Lindbergh. Styled by Christiane Arp, the images inspire in their beauty and honesty.
This editorial gives me a chance to share my applause and support for the decision by all 19 international editors of Vogue magazine to ban models from their pages who “appear to have an eating disorder” and are younger than 16. The editors are also committed to improving conditions for models, including that they are paid for their work.
