Laura Dekker on her around the world sailing voyage.How fascinating! There are few young people that I’ve covered in detail on AOC. Only two come to mind — my muse Dan Eldon whose book The Journey is the Destination: The Journals of Dan Eldon’ is key inspiration for AOC and GlamTribale and Laura Dekker, the young woman who sailed around the world as a very smart, free spirit.
Jillian Schlesinger’s film ‘Maidentrip’, which includes the credit ‘made with Laura Dekker’ is winning awards. In talking about Laura’s fight with the Dutch government to be allowed to sail, Schlesinger says:
It’s difficult to apply anything from Laura’s story to anything about young people being involved in such extreme activities. The reality is Laura is a truly exceptional human being with a very particular set of skills and life experiences that allow her to be able to do this very safely and very skillfully. It’s a very celebratory and positive representation of her story, but it’s uniquely about her and it doesn’t make an argument about what’s possible for other people.

May 28, 2011 Laura has arrived in French Polynesia, crossing the Pacific, alone in Guppy, in the same time she crossed the Atlantic. The distance is 800 miles further, she writes in her blog.
Everyone is wondering how I could make the crossing within 17 days and 22 hours. Except for a big 66-feet yacht, I could not yet find another boat that did the crossing faster than Guppy. And during conversations the question is often raised about how I managed to be that fast. Mostly they conclude that I must have been towed by a whale - or that I am the “Flying DutchGIRL”.. Unfortunately being so fast did not prevent Guppy from collecting underwater growth on her hull on the way over here. And so I spent half of my day today under Guppy once again, armed with diving goggles and a scraper.
