Melancholia and the End of the World
Are Sad Women the Prettiest? Kirsten Dunst in Melancholia
In Melancholia, a beautiful movie about the end of the world, Justine and Michael are celebrating their marriage at a sumptuous party in the home of her sister Claire, and brother-in-law John. Despite Claire’s best efforts, the wedding is a fiasco, with family tensions mounting and relationships fraying. Meanwhile, a planet called Melancholia is heading directly towards Earth.
Writing that Charlotte Gainbourg’s character is the easier one to relate to, the Gloss says that everything about Kirsten Dunst is remarkable in the movie. Charlotte Gainbourgh’s character? Not so much.
Culturally, we romanticize sad women in a way we don’t happy women. Zelda Fitzgerald. Eddie Sedgwick. Marilyn Monroe (especially Marilyn Monroe). There are probably other women just as pretty, but people are less inclined to think about the sublime beauty of Mary Tyler Moore or Doris Day or any of the other women who seem okay. Perhaps that goes along with the way men seem less invested in a woman’s sense of humor because when we see people with a positive outlook on the world, people who seem functional, we assume they need us less. And they probably legitimately do need us less, even if what we think they need us for is to shake them until they see that their life is fine. They certainly do not need anyone to give them a bath as Kirstin Dunst’s character does.

Versace’s Fashion Values
Donatella Versace As Modern Values Woman
Donatella Versace’s new well-priced H&M collection is premiering as an iconic inspiration of the brand. Versace tells The Daily Beast:
“I said I wanted to do the iconic pieces of Versace, Versace through history until now,” Donatella says, sitting on a couch in her corner office at the company’s headquarters, with a cigarette dangling from her mouth. “I wanted to show the young people what is Versace. I was expecting H&M to tell me, ‘No, you can’t do this,’ but I gave them some sample, and they came back with something very similar. If you look very close you can see it’s not the same, but three meters away you really get confused about which one is the original.”
Versace’s H&M Collection includes a palm-tree-print dress ($129) with matching leggings ($29.95) There’s a thigh-high metallic party dress ($249). For men, there’s a zebra-print jacket and matching jeans ($100 for both). And there are couch cushions ($29.95) with that iconic Medusa logo. “The only thing she complained about,” Vogue Italia Franca Sozzani told The Daily Beast “was not being able to wear high heels. Donatella said: “I can give up anything, but not my high heels.” Sozzani describes Donatella as “totally ironic and self-aware”.

When one looks closely, the styling is more on edge says Lou Amendola, chief merchandising officer. WWD reports that a men’s navy pin-striped suit is shown with a two-tone puffy vest and a bow tie. A women’s sweater dress is merchandised over a noniron white shirt. “The customer doesn’t know those rules,” referring to the rules of retail and styling.
