‘Practical Magic 2’ Box Office

The movie opened last weekend on the low end of expectations, with about $30 million in domestic receipts across 4,146 North American theaters, and $16 million in 77 international markets. With a production budget of $75 million, confirmed by Variety and Entertainment Weekly, the return on investment appears to be not promising.

Certainly the film is no blockbuster. But adjusted for inflation, the original 1998 film initially flopped as well. It opened at $13 million (about $27 million) but went on to develop cult status.

Returning to the Interview photoshoot and convo with Bullock and Kidman, photographer Mako shares his thoughts on the movie-inspired fashion shoot, in which Sandra Bullock teams up with Nicole Kidman for ‘Practical Magic 2’, directed by Susanne Bier.

“Sandra is all heart, no armor, only kindness, only work, only truth. For this story I wanted to bring the Owens house into my house. In Practical Magic, magic is never in the sky. It’s in the kitchen, in the fireplace, in the black cat that won’t leave the mantle. I didn’t want to photograph a witch. I wanted to photograph a woman who kept a house alive long enough for magic to grow back in. Thank you for trusting me with your return.”

‘Practical Magic’ was released Oct. 16, 1998, and even though it topped the box office chart, the $75 million feature earned mixed reviews and collected $68.3 million globally. "The movie was not considered a success at the time, and I took a bit of a hit as a director," Dunne reflected in 2017 about the film that has since cemented a cult following.
