A Wind-Powered, Cargo Ship With Hennessy Cognac On Board Heads for Baltimore

There’s a new Maison Hennessy era opening on the high seas with the transatlantic maiden crossing of the wind-powered cargo ship Neoliner Origin. Hennessy has been a pioneering partner with the French startup Neoline since 2020. On her maiden voyage, the sustainability-conscious queen of the seas is now headed for Baltimore, arriving on October 29, 2025.

Powered by wind energy, Neoliner Origin reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 80 to 90% compared with a conventional ship of comparable size. The vessel – measuring 136 meters and equipped with 4,200 square meters of sails – travels at a commercial speed of approximately 11 knots [12.5 mph] to minimize impact on marine ecosystems.

Maritime transport accounts for 85 to 90% of all Hennessy cognac shipments.  Partnering with Neoliner Origin marks a new milestone in the decarbonization of Hennessy's shipments. To achieve its objective of reducing CO₂ emissions by 30% by 2033, Hennessy is rethinking its shipping methods: “We have ambitious goals to reduce our carbon footprint. Thanks to wind energy, Neoliner Origin will allow us to significantly decrease emissions compared with an equivalent cargo ship,” says Mathieu Testud, Supply Chain Director.

Each month, the ship will transport the equivalent of twenty containers of Hennessy cognac, linking Saint-Nazaire to Baltimore, with stopovers in Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon and Halifax. The current schedule will deliver 4 million bottles of Hennessy annually.

In 2021, LVMH's parent company, Moët Hennessy, joined Clean Cargo, a global, business-to-business initiative dedicated to reducing the environmental impact of cargo transportation.
