In the 1960s, when the American painter Dorothea Tanning (1910-2012) got sick of the smell of turpentine, the artist began working with fabric. A transplant from Sedona, Arizona to Paris with her husband, artist Max Ernst, Tanning’s work “came up from a sort of rage, as if I were working blind,” she said in a filmed interview.

Hyerallergic explains:

Midway through Behind the Door, Another Invisible Door — a new retrospective of more than 150 of Tanning’s works at the Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid, organized in collaboration with the Tate Modern — the soft sculptures from this 1960s fury take the visitor by surprise. Tanning, who lived to be 101, is primarily known for her Surrealist paintings of the 1940s. While the sculptures seem like a radical departure, they are actually fluid adaptations of the lesser-known, loose-limbed paintings she began in the 1950s. Fleshy, primal, timeless, and odd, these fabric constructions present a head-on collision with the era’s Minimalist sculptors, such as Donald Judd and Tony Smith. They seem unprecedented: Louise Bourgeois wouldn’t start working with fabrics until decades later. The younger artist Annette Messager had just begun creating her early fiber work in Paris.

Tanning’s exhibition will travel to the Tate Modern, opening February 27 to June 9, 2019. The exhibition is curated by Alyce Mahon.

Burberry Agrees 'Suicide isn't fashion', Apologizes For Parading Lynching Noose Down Runway

Burberry Agrees 'Suicide isn't fashion', Apologizes For Parading Lynching Noose Down Runway

Add another “what were they thinking!!!” designer must-have to your Fall 2019 luxury shopping list. Insisting that the design was inspired by a marine theme that ran throughout the entire collection, Burberry agrees that their noose is easily understood as making both suicide and lynching fashionable. Given everything that’s happening around Gucci and Prada’s wild-side walk with blackface, it’s pretty incredible that these mishaps keep happening.

"We are deeply sorry for the distress caused by one of the products that featured in our A/W 2019 runway collection," Marco Gobbetti, Burberry chief executive officer, said in a statement provided to CNN.

The design was criticized by model Liz Kennedy, who wore it on the runway and claims that her expressed concerns about the noose were dismissed. Even wearing it during the show potentially put Kennedy in her own tough spot with social media. It was Kennedy who posted this message to Burberry on her Instagram:

Adut, Anok + Kaia Spread Love In Fendi's Spring/Summer 2019 Campaign By Karl Lagerfeld

Adut, Anok + Kaia Spread Love In Fendi's Spring/Summer 2019 Campaign By Karl Lagerfeld

Rising stars Adut Akech, Anok Yai and Kaia Gerber front Fendi’s Spring Summer 2019 campaign, lensed by the now-deceased Karl Lagerfeld. For those who suggest that the love fest between Adut and Kaia above is staged for the ad campaign, the two young women are very close friends in real life.

As fashion struggles to acknowledge past sins around diversity and in our human relationships generally, we must also acknowledge the reality of inspiring relationships as well. While I am totally exasperated with Gucci and Prada over blackface sweaters and trinkets, and now we add Burberry’s lynching/suicide rope from the Fall 2019 show, I want to just scream.

Simultaneously, when deep relationships and friendships between black women and white women exist — as is the case between Adut and Kaia — they must also receive our positive acknowledgement. Many will accuse Lagerfeld of staging the intimate, powerful photo of Kaia and Adut that leads this post. Thankfully, it is for real, and I am grateful for their message for humanity. Goddess knows we need it. ~ Anne
