In April 2018, Vogue zeroed in on Kiko with Kiko Mizuhara—Tokyo’s Biggest Model and Style Icon—On Becoming Dior’s New Girl and Bringing #MeToo to Japan. Writing what we already know, Vogue declared that Kiko has mostly flown under the radar stateside, until being tapped as the first Asian ambassador for Dior Beauty.
Born in Dallas, to an American father and a mother of Zainichi Korean descent Mizuhara lived in Texas until age 2, when she and her family relocated to Japan. Like most females, Kiko has a position on the #MeToo movement.
“I was inspired by the #MeToo movement and the Women’s March happening in the U.S., because in Asia, especially in Japan, lots of people [feel they] can’t really raise their voice,” she says. “[Now] it feels like everyone is getting inspired. I’m looking forward to the younger generation raising their voice, becoming confident, and saying what they want to say. I’d like to be the person who can help a little bit—make young girls feel proud of themselves and be able to be fearless!”

Porter Edit’s October 26 2018 issue turns its focus on supermodel, makeup entrepreneur, humanitarian and champion of black women’s rights: IMAN. It’s her focus on the fashion industry and her own activism on behalf of models of color that demands our focus, educating even me on the activism of IMAN, Bethann Hardison and Naomi Campbell’s launching of a campaign in September 2013 to force a reckoning over the dearth of models of color on the catwalk.
At AOC we see this pace of a primary place for models of color in the fashion industry escalating dramatically in 2017-2018. IMAN is totally correct is affirming that the changes are not only visible but blindingly so. It’s dazzling, frankly. Nobody gets a gold star for taking what was the right path all along. Nevertheless, the changes are breathtaking and a moment of joy for me personally as a citizen of Trumplandia.
