Cara Delevingne & Jane Birkin Front Saint Laurent Fall 2016 Campaign
/With rumors continuing to fly that Hedi Slimane's fall collection for Saint Laurent may be his last, the brand released two new ad campaigns this week. On Wednesday, the French fashion house released four new images of Cara Delevingne modeling 'La Collection de Paris'. Slimane photographed the actor and model Delevingne in New York City on March 17, showcasing three looks from the 80's inspired collection including a sleek tuxedo, a black sequined dress with major waist-cinching belt and and a fur coat styled in the shape of a cartoon heart. Previously iconic model Jane Birkin was photographed by Slimane wearing Le Smoking Tuxedo.
Vanessa Friedman was quite critical of the fall collection, writing:
. . . The house denied it was a couture collection, but it acknowledged it had been produced in the couture atelier. Which meant what, exactly?
That Mr. Slimane was proving he was the rightful heir to Mr. Saint Laurent, because he could do just what he did, down to the fuchsia sequins? That everyone would be sad to see him go, because all that pseudo-rebellion was just that? That he could do couture, and so all the rumors that he might be leaving to join a different legendary couture house were justified?
We’ll find out, soon enough. A more relevant question is: Why does anyone think women want to dress like the ghost of parties past? Mr. Slimane has unquestionably shown he can do a better job at recreating a specific historical time period — one currently obsessing many of his peers — than possibly anyone else in his position. It may be competitive. But is it really worth applauding?
